Warm, creamy, and gentle — Lenten rice pudding (sutlijaš) is one of those treats that brings back serenity and the scent of home. Just a few simple ingredients and a spoonful of Budimka plum jam take it to a whole new level.

Lenten Rice Pudding with Budimka Plum Jam

Ingredients

  • 1 l plant-based milk
  • 100 g rice
  • 80–100 g sugar (to taste)
  • 1 packet of vanilla sugar
  • A pinch of salt
  • Cinnamon or grated lemon zest (optional)
  • Budimka plum jam (for serving)

Preparation

  1. Rinse the rice under cold running water until the water runs clear.
  2. In a pot, boil 200 ml of water with a pinch of salt, add the rice, and cook until it absorbs almost all the water.
  3. Pour in the plant-based milk and cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, until the rice softens and the mixture becomes creamy (about 25 min).
  4. Near the end, add the sugar and vanilla sugar, and cook for a few more minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and transfer into small bowls.
  6. Sprinkle with cinnamon and add a spoonful of Budimka plum jam.
  7. Enjoy a Lenten treat that smells like tradition.
